Maca & Pregnancy

Is maca safe during pregnancy?

Maca is considered to be a trend in the wellness field. Woman seem to gravitate to it right now.

It’s has a multitude of benefits in the reproductive field. But, is it safe during pregnancy?

What is maca?

Maca is a cruciferous vegetable. It’s a root vegetable, like broccoli, and cauliflower. Maca is a great idea as a smoothie additive. I love the nutty flavor.

Traditionally, Maca is used to enhance fertility and improve energy!

But, there isn’t that much research about the benefits of maca during pregnancy. You will find research on animals, human males, or perimenopausal women.

Is maca safe during pregnancy?

As mentioned earlier, there is research on animals. Framers gave maca to their animals and their animals were reproducing again.

A study done on 14 pregnant women in the Andes found lower estrogen levels during their pregnancies. But, another study found there were actually increased estrogen levels in pregnant women in the Andes.  The research is not reliable and is mixed about maca benefits.

Since there isn’t enough evidence about maca consumption during pregnancy, it’s best to consult a professional about using it as a supplement while pregnant.

We don’t know how maca will benefit your baby.

The Big Picture

It isn’t recommended to start any kind of herbal supplement while pregnant. You should get sound advice from a medical practitioner.

There are some good results in studies done in women trying to conceive.

Overall, more research needs to be done before it’s safe to say that maca can be used as a supplement during pregnancy.
